FACE TO FACE: ART FOR ALL - PROCESS NOT PRODUCTWaterford Education Support Centre Eircode X91 XD98 Summer Course Booking Policy Our summer courses are booked on the condition that the course fee is non-refundable.
PRIMARY Teachers who attend the full 20-hour summer course will qualify for 3 extra Personal vacation days. __________________________ This course invites teachers to explore the power of visual art as a process-led, inclusive learning experience for all students. Through hands-on activities, reflective practice and collaborative discussion, participants will engage with visual art concepts in ways that encourage creativity, curiosity and experimentation rather than focusing solely on finished outcomes. Teachers will explore a range of artistic processes and develop greater awareness of artists, techniques and creative approaches. The course supports participants in making meaningful connections between visual arts and other curricular areas while aligning with key principles of learning, teaching and assessment and the development of core competencies. By experiencing and reflecting on creative processes themselves, participants will build confidence in facilitating engaging art experiences in the classroom that value exploration, imagination and individual expression, ensuring that art is accessible and meaningful for all learners. Bio: Susan O'Keeffe I am a qualified primary teacher with 24 years of experience in education and a long-standing interest in visual arts. Over the years, I have designed and delivered summer courses for teachers and worked with Teacher–Artist Partnership (TAP) for nine years, facilitating professional development courses for primary teachers nationwide in collaboration with artists, both online and face to face. I have also supported schools as a Creative Associate and as a Creative Cluster facilitator. I currently work with Oide as a Primary Learning Leader, supporting schools with the Primary Curriculum Framework and contributing to the Arts team in providing guidance on the new Arts specification being introduced in the 2026–2027 academic year. My qualifications include a degree in Art and Design and Geography, a Diploma in Leadership and Management and a Master’s degree from UCC with a focus on pupil voice, as well as a Diploma in Education and Law from the Law Society of Ireland. Alongside my work in education, I continue to create artwork and have exhibited pieces in Mount Congreve and The Hub in Carrick-on-Suir. In my courses, I aim to support teachers in building their confidence in teaching visual arts by exploring practical techniques and ideas that allow children to experiment, explore, and express themselves creatively with purpose, meaning, and enjoyment.

This course is designed for teachers who have not taken a Summer Course with GIY before. This course is designed to enable teachers to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to organise, develop and implement a school garden. Participants will develop the skills necessary to assess a site for the establishment of a school garden, develop a veg calendar and cultivate a range of vegetables. Emphasis will be put on developing a garden as an educational resource and managing a garden within the constraints of the academic year. The course will enable the participants to plan and implement school gardens to be used as a practical teaching resource for schools. A garden can be used to support a wide range of learning objectives within the primary curriculum. This course was very well received last year for our Summer Course Programme. Tutor: Mary Bishop has 18 years of education experience teaching in classrooms across the globe. She now works with the team at GIY bringing school gardens to life through the GROW at school programme. Her passion for integrating school curriculum outcomes into the garden for students supports teachers in harnessing effective ways to make the best of their school garden as teaching spaces. FACE TO FACE: CHESS FOR SOCIAL & COGNITIVE SKILLS - FICHEALL NETWORKDungarvan College, Coláiste Dhún Garbhán Eircode X35 PV34
Summer Course Booking Policy Our summer courses are booked on the condition that the course fee is non-refundable.
PRIMARY Teachers who attend the full 20-hour summer course will qualify for 3 extra Personal vacation days. Chess for Social & Cognitive Skills is like no other summer course as it is extremely hands-on and teacher-centred. Chess is a growing pastime in Irish primary schools with 1 in every 4 primary schools now joined the Ficheall network. It is an excellent extension to teaching the SPHE curriculum from 1st-6th class as well as being a fun hobby for students (and teachers) for rainy days. It promotes a variety of social and cognitive skills such as respect, forward planning, problem solving, decision making, accepting defeat, understanding resilience and developing a productive disposition to problem solving; all of which are addressed in the free beginner lessons available to participants. The course is excellent preparation for teachers looking to teach chess to children in 2026/2027 and register for the one-day fun-and-friendly, meet-and-greet, non-competitive Féile Fichille events.
James facilitated this course a number of years ago in Dungarvan. That particular cohort of teachers has since gone on to become successful chess teachers and Ficheall Chess Tournament Arbiters, Area Co-ordinators and Ficheall Tournament hosts. I have also facilitated this course in Clonmel and Cashel for the Tipperary Education Centre and as an online course for the Kilkenny Education Centre during Covid. I am currently the Ficheall Area Co-ordinator for the East Cork Area. I am a primary school teacher and have been teaching chess to pupils since I began teaching 20 years ago. Chess is a fantastic learning tool and really complements the primary school curriculum. From my own experience, the students benefit socially and cognitively through chess. The Ficheall approach provides a simple, fun and effective way of teaching chess in line with the primary SPHE curriculum Course is approved for 3 EPV Days. Some testimonials from 2,000+ teachers who completed the course in recent years:
Teachers will have the opportunity to learn how to play chess by playing chess mini-games against other novice teachers. The course will teach all participants:
